If You Really Learn How to Eat, You Might Only Need One Meal a Day!
People who are physically weak, lack energy, get hungry easily, or lack self-discipline—in other words, more than 90% of people—need food that truly nourishes them. The food that can truly provide nourishment isn’t what you see in your daily life. Human saliva is, in itself, a form of food!
“Grains nourish, fruits assist, meats benefit, and vegetables fill.” Many people know this. Eating according to this principle will, of course, replenish some energy. But at best, it can only maintain your basic balance. It cannot elevate your energy level to a higher tier. It cannot enhance your mental focus, immunity, receptivity, or vitality. If you want to gain nourishment from food, you must first nourish the food itself—you must nourish the very process by which food nourishes the body.
People are accustomed to eating when they’re hungry. This is a good habit. But everything depends on moderation. Once dependence sets in, once it becomes excessive, a good habit turns into a bad one. When you begin to depend on food—on eating to replenish your energy—your energy will steadily decline amid that dependence. People with a strong sense of dependence can’t do anything well. Wake up!
You need to understand that what you truly need is energy—not rice, vegetables, or fruit. When you eat them, you’re merely digesting them to extract energy from them.
If you can recognize that when you begin to feel hungry, that hunger is a form of energy—that hunger itself is a kind of food—and if you consume that hunger as sustenance, using it as energy and digesting and absorbing it, Your energy will be replenished. Happiness can serve as sustenance; when your vital energy is abundant, you won’t even think about food!
As a result, you can gradually transcend hunger. Your mental focus, resilience, endurance, receptivity, and vitality will all increase.
90% of people are bound by hunger. “Food and sex are part of human nature.” The inability to transcend dependence on food is the direct reason you cannot elevate your energy to another level.
Ordinary people eat whatever alleviates their hunger—such as the five grains and five vegetables mentioned above. This is because these foods are meant to relieve hunger. Hunger arises first; only then do these foods come into play. Therefore, they follow hunger. They are subordinate to hunger.
Compared to hunger, they exist on a lower dimension. At best, they are on the same level as hunger—and then begin to decline. This is why the wise say, “You are eating food, but the food is also eating you; the amount of food you can consume in this lifetime is already predetermined.”
If you can elevate your dimension and feed directly on hunger itself, you gain the potential to transcend hunger and break free from that predetermined limit.
Whenever a situation arises, the truly correct way to respond is to first make a fundamental observation, rather than acting blindly.
When hunger strikes, you habitually want to eat; you instinctively want to eat. But your habits aren’t necessarily correct, and your instincts still have room for improvement.
What is hunger? It is not merely a void that needs to be filled; it is itself a form of energy and information that can be digested.
Let me give an example using scientific terms.
When hunger strikes, the body secretes ghrelin. This is a hormone. As most people know, hormones possess extremely powerful energy. The reason hunger is so unbearable can be attributed to the power of hormones.
Since hormones are so powerful, if we could “digest” them, wouldn’t that replenish our energy? Clearly, it would. A key aspect of “refining essence into qi” in Daoist cultivation is the conversion of hormones into energy.
It can be said that the energy contained in ghrelin far exceeds the energy in the food you eat. If you digest this, your energy is replenished. In other words, if you “digest” the feeling of hunger, you will no longer be hungry.
From another perspective, what people refer to as “food” can be divided into external food and internal food. Today’s medical professionals, physiologists, and nutritionists are gradually coming to realize that it is internal food that truly plays the decisive role.
For example, people often talk about high blood lipids and high cholesterol. At first, everyone thought these were primarily derived from daily diet, but it was eventually discovered that they are mainly produced endogenously. Endocrine function and natural growth begin with an infant’s diet!
When you’re hungry, you can go eat. But you can also try not rushing to eat right away. First, relax and calm down, and observe your hunger. You can eat, or you can choose not to. That is true freedom.
If you can observe your hunger with ease and calm, you’ll find it isn’t so unbearable; you’ll discover that during this process of observation, you don’t seem quite as hungry anymore. The feeling of hunger is fading. Actively merge with your pain—either the pain will disappear, or you’ll fall into a deep sleep!
This approach has no side effects.
It’s different from when you’re hungry but don’t eat, instead distracting yourself by doing other things or playing games. The side effect of that approach is that you aren’t truly going without food—you’re just not eating a meal; you’re feeding off the activity you’re doing, or feeding off the game. You’ve consumed the wrong kind of “food”—that’s the side effect.
Feeding solely on hunger—purely on hunger. Quietly feel it and digest it. Then hunger will transform into your energy. Once you transcend hunger, your energy level will reach an entirely new dimension. Digesting your own energy, absorbing your own strength—starting with fasting and cellular autophagy!
