Awakening,Life,In the midst of this extreme agony, a cry bursts forth from the depths of your soul: I can no longer bear to be this way! If you have experienced, or are currently experiencing, such a moment, let me tell you the truth: this is the only gateway the universe offers you to a complete rebirth.

At three o”clock in the morning, when all is quiet, you are suddenly jolted awake from your sleep. Although your body is utterly exhausted, your mind is racing. Regrets from the day, anxieties about tomorrow and past traumas surge in like a tidal wave. Your thoughts are in utter disarray, and you feel a suffocating, inescapable despair.

In the midst of this extreme agony, a cry bursts forth from the depths of your soul: “I can no longer bear to be this way!”

If you have experienced, or are currently experiencing, such a moment, let me tell you the truth: this is the only gateway the universe offers you to a complete rebirth.

At the age of 29, Eckhart Tolle experienced this kind of despair—so profound it felt worse than death—at precisely three o”clock in the morning. Yet it was in that very moment that he discovered a dimension deeper than thought itself.

Today, drawing on his experience of awakening, I shall guide you to a thorough understanding of what “awakening” truly is. The article is rather long, but I hope you will be patient with yourself, for comprehending it will fundamentally transform the very fabric of the rest of your life.

I. Division: “I” and “Myself”.

When, in the depths of despair late at night, you cry out, “I cannot bear myself”, please stop all thinking and carefully savour the logic within this statement.

Who is “I”? And who is this “myself” that you cannot bear?

If there were only one you, how could you possibly split into two separate entities attacking one another? It is like a madman standing in a room shouting: “ “I can”t stand this madman any longer!”” Here, there must necessarily be a “consciousness” that is enduring the suffering, and an “object” (thoughts and emotions) that is causing the pain and being endured.

This excruciating inner tear is the highest-dimensional revelation that life offers you.

Eckhart suddenly realised on that late night: is it one “I”, or two? Who is this “myself” that I cannot bear? And who is “I”?

Most of us spend our entire lives living within a false sense of identity. We believe that the voice constantly reminiscing about the past, worrying about the future, and judging others is “me”. We believe that the “character” being tormented to the point of death by emotions is “me”. But the truth is precisely the opposite: that which is chattering away ceaselessly is merely your “stream of thought”; whilst the one observing the stream of thought is the real you.

That which causes you such anguish that you no longer wish to live is not the real you, but your distorted “brain (the mind)”. The real you is the “awareness (the soul)” that is enduring it.

II. The Brain”s Deception: You Are Being Held Hostage by an Automatic Programme.

After his awakening, Eckhart realised one of humanity”s greatest secrets: thoughts arise automatically, and people have absolutely no control over them.

Every day we say, “I am thinking.” But this is, in fact, a massive self-deception. If you observe your mind closely, you will discover that thoughts spring up of their own accord; they are completely beyond your control. It is like an out-of-control radio, broadcasting a cacophony of channels 24 hours a day.

Why does life feel so exhausting? Because your life is nothing more than a narrative woven by your mind.

Eckhart points out that, before his awakening, his perception of the reality around him was entirely filtered through a layer of “negative self-talk”. You feel your partner doesn”t love you enough; in reality, it is you who, through this filter, have interpreted a casual remark as a betrayal. You feel your future is bleak; in reality, it is you who, through this filter, have blown a minor setback out of all proportion into a catastrophe.

You think it is people and events in the outside world that are hurting you, but in reality, it is that “negative filter” in your brain that is frantically dramatising things for you. You treat your stream of consciousness as a deity, as the ultimate authority. Consequently, a single fleeting thought can plunge you into hell, whilst a casual glance from someone else can shatter your peace of mind for the entire day.

You have become a puppet held hostage by your own mind, a “hollow person” capable only of emotional reactions and devoid of genuine perception. You spin frantically within the script of your emotions, yet still believe you are thinking.

III. Falling into the Void: A Beautiful “Death”.

When Eckhart realised this, he felt an intensely powerful inner rupture. He gave up resisting; he felt as though he were falling into some kind of void, gradually dissolving.

The vast majority of people are terrified of this sensation, equating it with death. We cling desperately to external things and create a constant din, all in an attempt to escape this dreadful void.

But the truth is, this is precisely the death of the “ego”. It is the collapse of that “self” built up from countless false thoughts.

In this void, your familiar, anxious, story-laden “I” dies. You allow yourself to fall, no longer struggling. When he awoke the next morning, he found that everything had changed. He felt, for no apparent reason, an immense sense of calm.

This calm does not stem from possessing anything, nor from having solved all your problems, but from the fact that the brain-machine responsible for “manufacturing problems” has finally ground to a halt. You have finally detached yourself from that ceaseless stream of narrative.

You are no longer the protagonist in that thriller entitled *My Miserable Life*; you have become the audience member sitting in the back row of the cinema, watching the plot unfold on the screen. No matter how dramatic the events on screen may be, the screen itself remains utterly still. Not only are you watching the play, but you have finally realised that you are not in it.

IV. Awareness: A dimension deeper, higher and vaster than thought.

Eckhart said: “It was only when I stepped back from this ceaseless narrative of thought that I truly realised there is a deeper dimension within consciousness—one that lies deeper than thought. I now call this—awareness.”

What is awareness?

This is precisely what the Daoist text *The Essentials of Taiyi Jinhua* refers to as “turning the light inwards”. Daoism calls the brain the “conscious spirit” and your true awareness the “primordial spirit”.

How does one find this awareness? It is not some form of metaphysics, but an extremely concrete practice in daily life.

Next time, when you find yourself caught in a vortex of anxiety, anger or inner turmoil, do not try to analyse it, do not resist it, and certainly do not let your thoughts spiral further down that path. There is only one thing you need to do: take a step back and turn your gaze inwards.

Close your eyes and draw your attention, which has been projected outwards, back onto yourself. Feel your breath; feel the slight coolness of the air entering your nostrils; feel the rise and fall of your chest. Then, observe that anxious thought as if it were a dark cloud drifting across the sky.

You will discover a truly marvellous truth: that thought cannot harm you, for you are not that thought.

Thoughts are merely clouds in the sky, whilst you are the vast expanse of the void; emotions are but a breeze, whilst you are the unmoving earth. If you can see the clouds, it means you are greater than the clouds; if you can be aware of suffering, it means you are deeper than suffering.

As your awareness becomes increasingly stable, you will be able to “restore the primordial spirit to its rightful place and allow the conscious mind to step back”. You will no longer be controlled by your brain; you will begin to possess true freedom of choice.

V. All Things Are Miracles: Regaining Authentic Perception.

When you are able to abide in this awareness—which lies deeper than thought—your world will undergo a complete transformation.

When you open your eyes in the morning and see sunlight streaming through the curtains onto the table, you will suddenly find it incredible: why is there light? Why are there colours? Why has my heart been beating from the moment of my birth until now, without a single moment”s pause, without needing my command? Why is it that when a seed is buried in the soil, it needs no instruction yet instinctively knows to grow upwards?

When you free yourself from the brain”s “assumptions” and wipe away that “negative filter”, you will discover that you have played virtually no part in the vast majority of life”s processes. Countless systems operate of their own accord; the laws of the universe are utterly cold, yet utterly fair.

You will re-examine this world as if you were an alien landing on Earth for the very first time. You will discover that reality is never boring; it is your mind, numbed by concepts, that is the bore.

You are no longer that “hollow person” held hostage by thoughts, rushing about frantically every day, capable only of emotional reactions. You have become a person with genuine perception; you can savour the sweetness between my lines, read the tears in my unspoken words, and see miracles amidst the clamour around you.

Conclusion: At the end of suffering lies your true self.

All suffering is merely an alarm clock designed to rouse you.

That despair at three in the morning, that “self” that makes you wish you were dead—it is, in fact, the universe calling out to you: “Wake up! Awaken from this dream!”

If you are currently in the darkest hour of your life, do not be afraid. Deep within your despair lies the nuclear fuel for your complete liberation. Stop trying to fix that “flawed self”, for that self does not exist at all; it is merely an illusion conjured up by your mind.

Unclench your fist, let go of your control over your thoughts, and allow those restless thoughts to flow through you like water, falling into that vast, silent void.

There, you will encounter the real you—the one who has never left you, who is eternally calm and eternally perfect.

You do not need to change the world; you merely need to change the eyes through which you view it. When you take a step back and observe the “you” who is thinking, you will be free.

And that is where all miracles truly begin.
